INDEPENDENCE!

TO THE EDITOB Sir,—l have to thank two of your correspondents for putting me right about the publication To-morrow. I wondered what exactly your correspondent meant when he said it was an “ independent ” paper, but after listening to Mr Atmore’s broadcast on Monday evening I know. It is a tool for the Labour Party. Fulsome flattery of the Labour Government s achievements —assurances of glorious things yet to be done, which, _ of course, the Government can repudiate at a suitable time—for Mr Atmore is not a member of the Governmentabsolute condemnation of the Opposition. past, present and future! Not a word of the difficult times, with a lowered national income! Not a word of the 20 per cent, reduction in all interest! Not a word of the Mortgage Corporation, founded to bring together mortgagor and mortgagee before an independent court to try to find an amicable settlement—and in scores of cases a settlement was found, unlike the present Government's plan, which is a happy hunting ground for lawyers and self-certificated land valuers! That is an independent man or paper!—l am. etc.. Humility. TO THE*EDITOB Sir,—l listened in to a good part of Mr Atmore’s speech on Monday night, and must say that I was very disappointed. After doing so, I am quite satisfied that he is only independent in the sense that he is not bound by the Labour caucus. His “ soft soap ” makes one think that his chief concern is to ingratiate himself with a certain class of elector, Mr Atmore stated that the farmers had not had a fair spin, and that taxation was overdone Has he ever raised his voice—perhaps a voice in the wilderness—in Parliament to see that the matter is rectified?—l am. etc., N.Z.
