QUARRY WORKERS

CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS SHORT-TERM AWARD APPROVED A dispute between the Otago Quarry Workers’ Union and employers of the district was heard by the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) yesterday. The union was represented by Messrs L. Glover (Wellington), R. Harrison, B. O’Donnell, and E. Manson, and the employers by Messrs A. S. Cookson, R. S. M. Sinclair. H. S. Bingham, and S. P. Shiel. It was decided that a short-term award should be arranged in order to permit the parties to go into the question of a Dominion award, and to ascertain whether it would be more satisfactory to have the particular workers provided for in this industry included in the builders and general contractors’ award. The parties agreed to accept the terms of the present award, with some minor alterations. The rates of pay were fixed at a 2d per hour increase for all workers and the wages now range from 2s 4Jd to 2s 6id, and for youths from Is 4d to Is Bd. The award will be in force from June 3 to November 9.
