TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel A Busy Day Three special trains will be run from Christchurch to Ashburton on Monday. At Adelaide The totalizator investments at Wayville for the present season total £291.418. The Government’s share is £15.000. About Even According to an exchange, 175 galloping and trotting meetings have been held in New Zealand this season. The 75—25 system has been used at 88 and win-and-place at 87. Criticism When introduced in the first place it was expected that the classification of drivers would improve the standard of horsemanship, but (says an exchange) judging by the exhibitions given recently it is questionable as to whether some of them are entitled to A Grade licences.

Disappointment One of the disappointments at the Cambridge meeting was the Americanbred colt Langdalej who failed to flatter his supporters in either of his two starts. He will probably need a lot more time. Great Hope Great Hope, by Great Audubon — Sadie Dillon, a New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, is making headway as a winning sire in Tasmania. South Australia, and Western Australia. This season he has been represented by several winners, including Native Hope, Stylish Hope, Jenny’s Pride,' May Hope, Great Chimes, Great Pick, Baby Betty, Victor’s Hope, Desert Gold, and Hopewood. Great Hope was foaled in 1918, and is getting on in years. Sandusky The Jewel Pointer thx - ee-year-old gelding, Sandusky, who has returned to the winning list, had scored one previous win and six placings out of

10 starts. He has some considerable speed inheritance. His dam, Bonnie Bingen, was got by Great Bingen— Muriel Dillon, by Harold Dillon— Muriel Madison, by James Madison. Muridl Dillon is also the dam of Dilworth.

Lawn Derby Lawn Derby’s recent attempt to lower the mile record was probably spoilt by the slow first furlong, as proved by the fractional times. It took 33sec for the first two furlongs, 27 3-ssec for the second two furlongs, 30 9-10 sec for the third two furlongs, and 31 9-10 sec for the final two furlongs. The first half thus took Imin 0 3-ssec. Without a doubt (says the Trotting Record) the failure could be attributed to the first furlong, when Lawn Derby did not appear to be going at his top, and, considering that he travelled at a Imin 50 2-ssec rate for the second quarter the speed of this remarkable horse is phenomenal. Standing about 100 yards from the mile peg Lawn Derby moved off well, but shortly after skipped, and did not strike his true gait until nearly at the mile post. From then on he did not falter, although racing without hopples or boots. In registering 2min 2 4-ssec for the mile Lawn Derby again lowered the Australasian unhoppled record for one mile, which was established by himself when he did 2min 3 l-ssec at the Sydney Show.
