BOY SCOUT GATHERING

AN INTERNATIONAL JAMBOREE SELECTION OF SUITABLE INSIGNIA ENTRIES FOR COMPETITION (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. Boy Scouts from all over New Zealand have submitted entries for the competition to select a suitable insignia for the international jamboree to be held in Wellington in 1939-40. Close on 200 entries have been received by the Jamboree Committee. The prize for the winning design will be a free visit to the jamboree with all expenses paid. The winning design will not only be worn as a badge by all the 5000 or more boys drawn from a score of nations attending what is expected to be the biggest youth gathering that has yet taken place in the Dominion, but will also figure on all posters and publicity matter put out by the committee, and will be incorporated in the design of the main gate of the camp at Heretaunga, where the Government has made available an excellent site for the gathering. Entries for the competition have now closed. A great variety of designs have been submitted, some of which are of high artistic merit, although others are of obviously juvenile technique. The majority are based on themes of New Zealand emblems of the kiwi, fern leaf and Hei Tiki and the Boy Scout Fleur De Lys. Many of the young artists appear to have met with difficulty in depicting New Zealand’s national bird, and many of the representations are somewhat ludicrous. Not the least amusing is a suggested badge of a kiwi wearing a Scout hat and balancing the figures 1940 on the end of its tapered beak. The task of judging so many entries has been delegated by the committee to Mr L. C. Mitchell, the designer of many Government publicity posters, and two prominent members of the Scout movement. The decision is to be announced on June 15.
