EXPLANATION WANTED
SPEECH BY MR W. M. HUGHES THE NEW GUINEA MANDATE CANBERRA, June 2. (Received June 2, at 11.40 p.m.) Australia’s war-time Prime Minister. Mr W. M. Hughes, who helped to secure the mandate of New Guinea for Australia and who is at present visiting New Guinea as Minister of External Affaii's, is do be asked to explain a statement he made at Rabaul yesterday.
At a public reception Mr Hughes said: “We have got our mandate. On this rock we’ve built our church and all hell is not going to take away what we have. What we have, we hold.” The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) said that Mr Hughes would be asked immediately to supply a summary of his speech, which is regarded by some of the Fedei'al Ministers as ill-advised and provbcative at the present juncture.
