DEATH ROLL TOTALS 1400 i AERIAL BATTLES CONTINUE CANTON, May 31. A fourth' raid by five planes at 9 a.m. caused heavy explosions in the thickly-populated Hdnam district. It is feared that there were considerable civilian casualties. The three previous raids resulted in 1400 killed and 2100 injured. In an air battle over Hankow the Chinese lost two out of 50 machines, but shot down 15 of 54 Japanese planes. A report from Hankow states that Chinese fighter planes repelled 60 Japanese raiders from over the city. It is reported that 200 Japanese planes set off this morning to bomb Chinese towns. A message from Tokio states that it is officially estimated that up to May 24 the Chinese lost 103,000 killed and 137,000 wounded in the battle for Hsuchow. TARIFF REDUCTIONS EXTENSION TO CENTRAL CHINA SHANGHAI, May 31. The Japanese-fostered Nanking Government announces the extension of the big reductions in the North China tariffs, which were introduced on January 20, to Central China, including Shanghai, from June 1. The main reductions in imports include woollen piece goods 75 per cent., artificial silk 70 per cent., cotton cloth, iron, tin, and paper 40 per cent.
