SOUTH AFRICA’S ANTHEM
SUBSTITUTION FOR " GOD SAVE THE KING " INDIGNATION AROUSED CAPETOWN, June 1. (Received June 1, at 10 p.m.) English-speakipg South Africans are indignant at the playing of “ Diestem van Suid Africa ” at the Union Day military parades yesterday, while “ God Save the King ’’ was omitted. The Cape Times, in a leader, says; “ Diestem van Suid Africa ” has definitely take the place of “ God Save the King,” not as a joint anthem, but as an anthem superseding the latter at ceremonies where “ God Save the King” is clearly and decisively more appropriate. The Cape Times urges that the matter should be righted without delay. The Prime Minister (General J. B ■Hertzog) announced on February 18 that “ Diestem van Suid Africa " would be South Africa’s national anthem. “ God Save the King ” would be played only in the presence of the King’s representatives.
