NARBADA SAILS The Union Company's Eastern trader Narbada, after completing discharge here, sailed yesterday for Newcastle and Calcutta. ANTIGONE FOR WESTPORT The steamer Antigone, which, after completing discharge of a cargo of newsprint at Dunedin, docked for cleaning and painting, left Port Chalmers,yesterday for Westport. TANKER PEGASUS AWAY The Swedish motor tanker Pegasus completed discharge yesterday of Iter cargo of petrol for the Vacuum Oil Company, and sailed early in the afternoon for Pnlembang. RANGITANE AT COLON The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Rangitane sailed from Colon on the afternoon of May 30. Site la due at Wellington on June 14, TEKOA IN PORT The New Zealand Shipping Company’s cargo steamer Tokoa arrived from Bluff yesterday morning to continue Homeward loading. REMUERA LATER The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the liner Remuera, from London, Is now expected to reach Auckland on Monday, two days behind her schedule date. She Is now due at Port Chalmers on June 15. PORT CHALMERS WHARF The work of strengthening the nndcr-struc-ture of the George street wharf at Port Chalmers to carry cranes has been commenced. The flush deejilng of half the width of the wharf Is Included In the Job, which Is likely to last until December, TANKER BRAMORA The Norwegian motor tanker Bramora. bringing petrol for the Texas Oil Company from Richmond, California, Is due here this morning to complete discharge. RIGAULT DE GEXOUILLY The French war sloop Rigault de Genoullly arrived here yesterday morning In the course of a Dominion cruise, and berthed at the Birch street wharf. She Is to sal) again on Monday for Tahiti. CUMBERLAND LATER Tq complete discharge of her Liverpool cargo and commence Homeward loading, the Federal steamer Cumberland is now expected at Port Chalmers next Wednesday. She will remain here till June 19, when she will sail for Bluff, Timarn, Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland to complete. She Is scheduled to sail finally about July 7 for London, Hull and Newcastle, • THE PORT MONTREAL , On her first visit to New Zealand, the new motor ship Port Montreal is at present at Auckland. She was built by William Doxford and Sons at Sunderland last year to be another of the Port Line units In the Monlrcal-Auslralian-Ncw Zealand service from Eastern Canada to Australia and New Zealand. This Is her second voyage, as she went to Australia on her maiden run. Captain E. J. Syvret Is In command of the vessel, which is of 5000 tons gross. The Port .Montreal Is expected here about Juno 14 to complete discharge and loading, and Is to sail on June 18 for New York. Boston and Montreal. NORTHERN STEAMSHIP COMPANY " Notwithstanding an Intensification of competition, there has been a marked improvement In the company’s business during the past year,” said the chairman of directors. Sir Ernest Davis, at the annual meeting of shareholders in the Northern Steamship Company, Ltd., the other day. Recognising the prudence of strengthening reserves as well as ensuring an equitable return to shareholders, the directors had recommended the payment of a dividend of 3 per cent. Next year. Sir Ernest hoped, the sum would be larger. Shareholders would realise that under the new order the increase In general overhead, which had been common to commerce as a whole, was necessarily an offset against increased earnings, the chairman stated. The revenue of the company's boats had Increased by £21,587, but 74 per cent, of this amount (equal to £13,986) was absorbed by additional running costs, consisting of handling cargo, Increases In wages, higher maintenance charges, and prices for- fuel and all stores. The company’s ships carried 38,674 passengers, or 10,014 fewer than in the previous year. Owing to the ever-increasing cost of running passenger steamers, and the competition from motor services—made easier by good roads—lt was difficult to maintain these trades profitably, and It would be only a matter of time before there would be no passenger boats left. With regard to cargo, however, the amount of outward cargo carried was 208,009 tons, or 8010 tons in excess of last year’s figures. Dairy produce totalling 33,116 tons was transported. This was an Increase over the returns for last year, and would have been greater but for the extremely dry spell experienced during the summer mouths.

" Finding as It does livelihood for 1000 employees, and paying during the year a wages bill as large as £142,365, the company continues to play a very important part in the commercial Interests of Auckland and In the development of the province,” said Sir Ernest. "To maintain Us fleet in good order, the company spent on this account alone the sum of £12,000 last year. With the object of increasing farther the efficiency of Its marine units, and to meet present-day demands for speed, the company is placing larger engines in three of its ships. These engines will be more economical to run, and, with the greater speed made available, the vessels will be able to make more trips.” Referring to the future, Sir Ernest said that, in spite of extended railway services and road transport competition, there must always be a place for coastal services in Auckland, with its wonderful coast line and safe harbours.
