“THE VAGABOND KING”
COMMENCING ON SATURDAY The Dunedin Operatic Society’s forthcoming production, “ The Vagabond King,” one of the most enjoyable musical comedies, will be commenced with a gala matinee at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday. “ The Vagabond King,” it is believed, is being presented in New Zealand for the first time by amateurs, and had a sensational run when it was produced professionally at the Winter Garden Theatre, London, some years ago. The society is featuring Miss Rita Stone in the role of Katherine, and she has several delightful numbers, including “ Only a Rose,” “ Some Day," and, with Mr James Macfarlane, “ To-morrow.” Mr Macfarlane, in the title role, proves himself equal to the demands made upon him, and his chief solo, “ Song of the Vagabonds,” will be one of the highlights of the show. Miss Freda Elmes has the role of Huguette, and her numbers will include “Love for Sale” and “ Hearts May Flower.” Mr Richard White will be seen as King Louis XI, and Mr Stan Lawson as Guy Tabaria, and Mr Richard Murphy as Oliver will be responsible for the comedy of the piece. Others who will take leading parts are Harriet Hamer (Margot). Tui NortheJ' (Lady Mary), S. S. Lock (Tristan), E. W. Griffiths. Jack Johnson, Mark Gaston, John Gordon. Donald Munro and E Ombler, The ballets for the production have been trained by Miss Rosetta Powell, and are novel and original in their construction. The chorus will be under the baton of Mr James Clark, the musical director, who will also be responsible for the large orchestra. Further particulars are advertised.
