ARSON CHARGE AT GISBORNE TWELVE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT (Per United Press Association) GISBORNE, June 1. As a result of the fire which destroyed the Homestead of the late Mr K. S. Williams at Ruatoria, Robert Edgar Morris, aged 48 years, appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Reed to-day on a charge of breaking and entering the premises during the absence of the occupants. It was stated that Morris had been on a drinking bout and had entered the home of his employers in an endeavour to secure drink. In an appeal for leniency, counsel said that the accused had arranged to get married this month. His Honor said the offence was too serious to be dealt with by probation, as the accused had set fire to the house. The accused was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, A young Maori, Hawi Korua, who was also charged with breaking and entering at Ruatoria, was sentenced to two years’ detention in the Borstal.
