WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. Mrs V. Barnard was chairwoman at the monthly meeting of the Waituna Institute. The Arno and Mprven Institutes and the W.D.F.U. forwarded invitations to attend their birthday parties, and helpful hints were given by Mesdames Ross, H. Hosking, and McLean. The “golden thread talk on a famous man was given by Mrs H Jackson, who took for her subject “The Life of Richard John Seddon. A speaker at the meeting was Mr A. Beattie, who gave a very comprehensive description of Maori traditions m southern New Zealand. Mrs Richards contributed two vocal, items. The winners of the competitions were.Mesdames W. Smart, J. L. Smith, Jackson, Hosking, and Grant (first , Mesdames H. Christie, Grant (second , and Mesdames Robertson, Jackson, Hosking, and J. L. Smith (third). # ¥ * An enjoyable social and dance was held on May 20 to celebrate the eighth birthday of the Henot Institute. _ Items were given by the following.—-Miss Isabel Sim (song), Miss Patricia Potts (Highland fling), Miss Brooks (song), Mr W. Walker (song), Miss Gwen Sim and Mr W. Patterson (duet), Messrs F. Herbert, L. McKenzie, W. Walker, W. Patterson, G. Sim, and R. Brady (humorous item, “Local Hits”). During the evening the president (Mis Adams) presented the prizes to the winners of the year’s competitions, as follows:—Mrs Herbert 1, Mrs King 2, Miss I. Patterson 3. The special prize in the bloom competition was won by Mrs King and Miss Patterson (equal). The eight candles of the birthday cake were lit by Mrs Duff (Moa Flat) and Mrs Shirley (Kelso), and blown out by Mrs Arnold (Tapanui). Mrs Fleming (Crookston) then cut the cake. The “lucky spot” waltz was won Mrs Sharpe and partner, and the “ lucky cups ” by Miss Finalav and Mr Ramsay. Mr S. Sim and Mrs Fleming won the “ lucky seats ” competition- % v A very pleasant afternoon was spent on Wednesday last, the occasion being the eighth birthday party of the Roxburgh Institute. Visitors were Present from Heriot Institute. Millers Flat Women’s Division. and Ettrick Women’s Division. The afternoon was spent in games and items, which included solos by Mrs D. Dunlay and a very amusing play acted by the Playreading Circle, the players being Mesdames Graham, Waters, Martin, and Hayes and Miss Blanchard. A lucky cup competition was won by Mrs McEwan and Mrs Donnelly. The birthday cake, made by Mrs R. Tamblyn and decorated by Mrs J. Young, was a feature of the afternoon s enjoyment, the candles being lit by Mrs McEwan, president of the Millers Flat Women’s Division and extinguished by Mrs E. Watt, of Ettrick. Mrs Adams (president of the Heriot Institute), in cutting the cake, extended to the Roxburgh Institute best wishes for its future success. An added attraction was a display of articles for the bay at the Winter Show. Afternoon tea was served by the members.
