TANKER PEGASUS Having completed discharge of her cargo of petrol for the Vacuum Oil Company, the tanker Pegasus is to sail this morning for Palerabang. CAPTAIN VV. J. M. TATE Captain William John Maclean Tate, who, in the latter years of last century, commanded several well-known sailing ships, died in Wellington on May 24. Born In Suffolk, England, Captain Tate first came to New Zealand In the Auckland, a noted ship of the Sharf Savlll and Albion fleet in the mld-clghtles. Ho was chief officer under Captain Charles James, a wellknown skipper who .was in the employ of the Shaw Savlll Company for 31 years. Captain Tate was later In charge of the same company’s barque Langstone. She was sold, however, and he took charge of the Helen Denny and brought her to New Zealand on her last trip for the Shaw Savlll Company before she entered the intercolonial and Inter-provlneial trade for Messrs Turnbull and Co., of Christchurch.! His last sailing ship command was the Weathcrsflcld, which went ashore at Otakl in 1888, and was later refloated. She was‘bought by the Union Sleam Ship Company, and Captain Tate took her from Wellington to Fiji to be used as a coal hulk. Just after he left port he encountered a stiff blow and the Weathcrsflcld nearly went up on the beach on which she had boon stranded some years previously. * Captain Tate brought her back to Wellington and, after some of her sticks had been taken out, set off for Fiji again. He was In the service of the Union Company until 1913 and commanded numerous steamers. During the war Captain Tate was In charge of the examining vessel in Wellington Harbour.
