Dairy Season Ends From the suppliers’ point of view the dairying season in Eastern Southland, which has now practically ended, has been the worst for many years, the main cause having been the drought conditions which have prevailed in the district during the summer months. The supplies to all factories have dwindled rapidly during the past three or four weeks, and several have ceased operations for the season much earlier than usual. The Mataura Dairy Factory, which handles the biggest quantity of dairy produce in the district, has been engaged in butter-making since May 2, and has been receiving milk on alternate days. In the past week or two suppliers have maintained an intake of approximately 1000 gallons, but most of the herds of big suppliers were dried off about a fortnight ago, the owners probably facing a shortage of feed and desiring to see their herds enter the winter period in fair condition. The Mataura factory ceased operations yesterday. Building at Mataura There is every possibility that Mataura’s big secondary industries will be considerably expanded during the winter months. Although no official announcement has yet been made it is understood that the New Zealand Paper Mills Company, Ltd., has in view a small building programme, which will include new office accommodation. The directors of the Southland Frozen Mont Company, Ltd,, are contemplating a much more ambitious programme. At the present time plans are being prepared for a new fellmongery and for extensions to the present slaughterboard, while contractors have already started in the work of constructing additional cool storage by extending the existing chambers over the water race. It Is expected that when the latter contract is completed cool storage will be provided for an additional 25,000 carcasses. The erection of a new fellmongery will mean that the corrugated iron building at the west end of the works, until recently used for handling rabbits, for the export trade, will be done away with. The work is in furtherance of the company's decision some years ago to carry out an extensive rebuilding programme. RANFURLY Miniature Rifle Shooting Good attendances are being maintained at the weekly shoots of the Ranfurly Miniature Rifle Club. The average of 76.0 recorded on Monday night was below that usually attained by the club, most of the best shooters being below standard. The rifle button was won by J, E, Kearney and the handicap button by J. Quinn. Details: J. E. Kearney 78-I—7o, J. C. Kearney 78—1—70, P. Simmons 78-3-60, C. Mulholland 77—4—80, J.
