WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. The monthly meeting of the Cromwell branch was held on Thursday last, when Mrs J.' S. Ritchie presided. The remits for the provincial conference were read and considered, and a very instructive demonstration and lecture on “ Upholstery ” was given by Miss Buddie, of the Otago University, The hostesses were Mesdames J. S. Ritchie and R. Ritchie. ¥• w The Livingstone branch celebrated its fifth birthday party on May 10 with a dance. Mrs Barnes, the president, welcomed the visitors, and called upon the guests of the evening from Duntroon. Otekaike, Tokarahi. Ngapara and Enfield, presidents of the various branches, to say a few words, and each one congratulated the branch on attaining its fifth birthday. The beautiful cake was then brought forward. Mrs Barnes lit the candles and Mrs Kennedy blew them out. Mrs Meek then cut the cake and congratulated the branch. She spoke on the work of the division, which had grown to a very large membership. Mrs Barnes presented the prizes to the winners of the competitions held during the year as follows:—For most

points: Miss Samuelson 1, Mrs Kennedy 2. Mrs Clark 3. For the cutflower competition: Mrs R. C. Cook 1. Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Meek, Barnes and Kennedy. Mrs R. Haugh, of Duntroon, delighted the audience with several songs, the accompanist being Miss L. Crisp. Supper was handed round, and dancing and cards were kept up till a late hour.

The fourth birthday of the Omarama branch was held on May 24, when a large number gathered to enjoy the dancing, songs, and tap dance items, the music being supplied for the dance by the local boys’ mouthorgan band, Mr and Mrs J. McAughtrie and Mr Munro. Extras wdre played by Mrs Williamson and Messrs Depree and Cameron. Mr J. S. Woods capably carried out the duties of M.C. Mesdames Wardell, Cambridge and Kain spoke on behalf of the members, thanking all who had helped to make the evening such a pleasant and successful one. The birthday cake, which was cut by the life member. Mrs Cambridge, was piped on to the stage by Mr H. Cameron. Winners of the lucky spot dances were Mr and Mrs McAughtrie, and Miss Collins and Mr E. Campbell; and Miss Wilkie and Mr McKay won the Monte Carlo.
