CHORAL SOCIETY

TO-MORROW NIGHT’S CONCERT Box plans are filling rapidly for the Dunedin Choral Society’s first concert of the year, which will take place at the Town Hall to-morrow night. Of unusual interest is the special engagement of Alan Loveday, the nine-year-old New Zealand violinist, who comes to Dunedin with a considerable reputation for one of his years. His technique has amazed critics and the public alike. For the rest of the evening's entertainment the society has chosen two appealing works, which give pleasant scope for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. The featured presentation will be Alfred Hill’s lovely musical setting of the legend of “Hinemoa.” Very few of the younger generation can be familiar with the enchanting music, and its attractiveness will prove a surprise to many. Perhaps its greatest feature is the “Ra Ha!" chorus of warriors, while, on the other hand, there is some lovely solo work for the soprano and tenor, who, on this occasion, will be Mrs N. R. Henderson and Mr James Hinton. The programme will be completed by the first local performance of a likeable suite by Coleridge-Taylor, the “Bon Bon Suite.” It is a gay collection of songs to words by Thomas Moore, and, with Mr Arthur Lungley as soloist with the full chorus and orchestra, it should prove a most satisfying item. Mr Alfred Walmsley will be at the conductor’s stand, and will have the society’s full orchestra under his baton.
