DAMAGE BY FLOODS
SLIPS AND EROSION EFFECT OF VANISHING FORESTS (Per United Press Association) GISBORNE, May 26. Damage exceeding £22,015 was done in Waiapu County by recent floods, according to the report submitted to the council by the engineer. Four floods hac occurred since February, each occasioning serious damage to the roads by slips and erosion. The engineer adds that the serious flooding commenced after the forests had been cleared, and each succeeding flood has caused heavier damage. He does not think the erosion can be checked until half the area of the country has been returned to forest.
