Y.M.C.A. TOURNAMENT
DUNEDIN v. CHRISTCHURCH LOCAL BOYS IN THE LEAD The annual athletic meeting between the Dunedin and Christchurch Young Men’s Christian Associations was commenced at the Liltlebourne Ground yesterday afternoon. The fixture, which is held to decide the holder of the Herbert Smith Trust Shield, was inaugurated some years ago and lasts for approximately a week. The Christchurch boys, under the management of Mr D. Ross, arrived in Dunedin on Wednesday night, when after an official welcome at a tea parly at the Y.M.C.A.. they were entertained at a local theatre. Yesterday morning the visitors were taken on a tour of inspection of some of the factories in the city, and during the evening the tournament was continued with a prepared speeches contest which was judged by Dean Cruickshank, after which table tennis and colorette were played. The programme for to-day will include a Rugby football match in the morning and in the evening basketball and dodgeball matches will be played at the Y.M.C.A. To-morrow there will be a steeplechase commencing at the Littlebourne Ground at 10 a.m., and on Sunday the visitors will be taken on a motor tour of the city and suburbs. In the evening a church parade at St. Paul's Cathedral will be held. The presentation of the shield to the winning association will be made at a farewell supper at the conclusion of the church service. The contest was won by the Dunedin boys by a very close margin of points. The judge, in his summing up, commended the boys on their performances and offered some helpful criticisms.
