DRUNK WHILE ON SUSTENANCE
TO THE EDITOH Sir,—ln almost every paper we pick up nowadays we read of cases of sustenance men being prosecuted for being drunk in charge of cars. I consider it grossly unfair that the Government should prosecute those men when it contributes so much to the cause of their downfall. It is only natural that a man with a comfortable income and nothing to do will celebrate occasionally. I suggest, therefore, that the Government purchase suitable areas, where sustenance men could “ make whoopee” and drive their cars as they liked without the danger of stupid workers getting in the way. There might also be a quiet corner where the Oriental beneficiaries of the State could indulge in their favourite pastime without the fear of interfering policemen butting in. But perhaps my great plan is only second-hand after all. The late City Council in Dunedin may have had a similar plan in view when it purchased the Passmore estate—l am, etc.. Benevolent.
