ASSAULT ON HINDU (Per ’ United Press , Association) WELLINGTON. May 19. Imposing a sentence of three months with hard labour on William James Gilbert, aged 25 years, who was found guilty of common assault on a Hindu, Mr Justice Reed said: “Your assault on this inoffensive Indian was simply the act of a larrikin and bully, and deserves to be punished accordingly. Gilbert said: I can’t help feeling that I have served nearly three weeks’ imprisonment on remand, and it has also put me to a great deal of expense. Charlie Rangi, aged 26 years, was sentenced to 12 months on a charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime. In reply to the prisoner’s appeal for another chance, the judge reminded him that he had not availed himself of chances in the past. William Clarence Carroll, aged 26 years, for forging and uttering,, was ordered to come up if called on within two years. Cyril Ernest Broom, for theft, was granted two years’ probation, William Robert Thomson, for negligent driving, causing' death, was sentenced to six , months with hard labour. INTOXICATED MOTORIST NINE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT (Per United Press Association) y’ INVERCARGILL, May. 19 Clarence Herbert Hibbs, a married man, was sentenced to-day. by Mr Justice Kennedy to nine months with hard labour, and disqualifies! from holding a licence for five'years, for being intoxicated while in charge of a car, and by act or omission causing death. On a charge of negligently driving a car, thereby causing death, Hibbs was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within one year. t
