OFFICIAL FORECAST \ COLDER TEMPERATURES The following is the official weather forecast:— A cyclonic depression moving rather rapidly in a south-easterly direction was centred just east of Cape Maria Van Diemen at 3 p.m. yesterday. A rather intense anti-cyclone covers south-eastern Australia. Indications are for:— Winds.—Between oast and south over the North Island and south-west and south over the South Island, force moderate to strong generally, and rising to gale force in places about and north of Cook Strait. Seas.—New Zealand waters: Rough to higli north of East Cape and slight to moderate south of Farewell Spit; elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising. Eastern Tasman Sea; Moderate to strong southerly winds and rather rough to rough seas. Weather. —Overcast over the North Island, with general rain and some heavy falls and flooding in the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay provinces; some scattered showers or misty rain also over the South Island, an improvement commencing shortly and temperatures becoming colder. Steady rain, with a fresh wind from the south-south-east, was experienced all day. The maximum temperature was 63 degrees. The barometric pressure continued a sharp fall, the reading at 5 p.m. being 29.00 inches. WELLINGTON. May 19. Though there was considerable cloud, it was, for the most part, thin and high, and the weather was fine and almost summer-like until 3 p.m. In the morning there was a very light northerly wind, but from about 3 p.m. the direction turned definitely to the south. The sky became covered with low cloud, and the temperature fell somewhat. The minimum temperature last night was 53.0 degrees, and the maximum to-day 65.0 degrees. At 3 p.m. the barometer reading was 29.814 inches ' CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. The weather was fine and mostly sunny to-day, with a light north-east breeze. The maximum temperature was 56 degrees.
