BOROUGH AERODROMES

THE NEED EMPHASISED DEVELOPMENT AT WHANGAREI (Per United Press Association) DARGAVILLE, May 18 Before leaving for Whangarei this morning the Postmaster-general (Mr F. Jones) inspected the Post Office, and also, in company with the Mayor (Mr Raymond Gibson), the proposed site of the aerodrome at Awakmo road, about three miles from the Post Office, which has been surveyed and reported upon by the Public Works Department. The scheme, comprising two sections, entails taking, first, 80 acres of land at present unoccupied and valued at about £3OO. This will give three runoffs of 400, 500. and 660 yards. The second development takes an additional area of land valued about £2OOO, and will give runways up to 1000 yards. The Minister promised to confer with the aviation grounds engineer, Mr E. A. Gibson, and advise the Mayor. The Minister stressed the need for boroughs such as Dargaville to establish aerodromes, and suggested that the first step should be the formation-of an airport board comprising the borough council and adjoining counties.
