THE TERRITORIAL ASSOCIATION

to TUE EDITOB

- sir—Within the next few days an appeal by circular letter is being made on behalf of the newly-formed Territorial Association of Otago. This association has been formed (1) to arouse public attention regarding the matter of defence, and to show all citizens ways and means whereby they can assist; (2) to gain the goodwill of all employers so that they may encourage their employees to attend military camps and without loss of wages while doing so; (3) to give talks and addresses to all organised groups of young men in order to obtain more recruits for our local Territorial units. Territorial Associations ha.ve been in existence in Great Britain for many years, and there are branches in Auckland and in Christchurch. The general function of such an association is to act as a link between the public and the men in the Territorial army. Our association is carrying out its work steadily, and, through its Executive Committee, is using all. possible methods of appealing to the general public, and to the prospective recruit By its unit-visiting sub-committee, the association keeps in touch with the existing Territorial units in order to leam their needs. One result of this is to impress on the young men in our Territorial forces that the general public is now really interested in their work, and wishes to learn under what conditions it is being carried out, and whether these conditions can be improved. In these and other ways the association can exert a powerful effect in obtaining the necessary recruits, and in raising the status of the Territorial Force. The Territorial Association is there-

fore fulfilling a highly useful function, ' and thus merits the interest and support of all citizens,' who are hereby asked to aid in the work by joining either as an associate member at one" guinea per year,. or as an ordinary member at five shillings per year. The subscription for ladies has been fixed at 2s 6d. The honorary secretary and treasurer is Mr L. A; Rhodes. 114 Princes street, C.l. As there.are no funds at our disposal, subscriptions and donations are needed to enable us to carry on this vital work, and they will be acknowledged, on the official printed forms.— * On behalf of the. Executive Committee. ' I am, etc., , ■: Roland A. H. Fulton, :' : ':, ' ... %..: , Chairman;.
