TWO PROFESSIONAL CONTESTS The Otago Boxing Association has arranged two professional contests for Monday night at the Town Hall, and in view of Clarrie Marshall’s showing at Auckland last Monday night, his 12-round contest with Stan Jenkin is attracting much interest. In his amateur and professional career Marshall has beaten some of the best men of his weight in the Dominion, and should provide Jenkin with a hard contest Among Marshall’s victims have been George McKay, F Mclvor, R. Reid (now meeting with success in Australia), and George Low (who won the New Zealand amateur middle-weight title in 1935). The main bout will be preceded by a 10-round professional bout between Lex Greaney of Dunedin, and “ Tiger ” Mitchell, of Christchurch, and there will also be a four-round amateur preliminary between Neil Leckie (Dunedin) and B. Newton (Oamaru). Marshall will arrive in Dunedin by plane this afternoon, and will work out at Langley’s gymnasium at 7 o’clock this evening MAURICE STRICKLAND RETURNS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 13. Maurice Strickland, the New Zealand boxer, who in the past three years has climbed to the top rank of heavy-weight boxers, returned by the Monterey, accompanied by his wife and small son. He will leave to-night for Wellington. He is spending a fortnight in the Dominion and will then return to America. He said he expected to be able to claim a world championship match a year hence. Meanwhile he will box under a contract to Jack Kearns, Dempsey’s late manager, He remarked that he had been listed by a New York premier sports .writer as the fifth boxer of the world after Louis. Schmeling. Baer and Farr. . He said he would like to spend six months among the New Zealand amateurs. “ I would take some big, husky ones back to America. I am sure they would do well.”
