THE FARMER AND THE LABOUR PARTY

TO THE EDITOR Sir—ln this letter I am stating briefly what we farmers have to contend with. We have been lately receiving notices through the post, one of which I enclose for publication. The inspector duly arrives and becomes a sort of non-paying boarder till such time as he has traced the receipt and expenditure of .every pound the farmer has handled during the last six years. The notice should include the Post Office Savings Bank books of the farmer’s wife and family, and woe betide the farmer whose wife put a pound in the Savings Bank during the period named. Unless he can prove that she “struck Tatts,” or fell heir to a legacy, he is in difficulties. There is a legal point here which I would like answered through your columns. Can a department collect on d debt six years old when the alleged debtor has had no indication through the intervening years that such debt was owing? Mr Savage poses as a sort of philanthropist but apparently the Government would take a worm from a blind lien and then try to persuade the hen that worms were not good for it and that the worm was deducted from its menu in its own interests.—l am, etc., Scratching.

Please note that I have been Instructed to carry out an investigation of your income for employment tax putposes for the years ended March 31. 1933, 1934, 1935, 1938, 1937 and 1938. I shall be calling on you shortly and I shall be pleased if you will have ready for Inspection relating to the Income for these years your (a) books of account, (b) bank pass nooks and cheque butts from April 1, 1932, (c) firms’ statements and accounts, (d) insurance and rates receipts, (e) wages books, (f) receipts for the employment charge, (g) levy book and levy books of employees. It will be helpful if all the accounts are available in order of date.
