PASSENGERS BY SEA
A HAWKE’S BAY PROPOSAL AWAITING COMPLETION OF RAILWAY (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS, May 13. “The revenue derived from passengers only would not be sufficient to run a regular service to Waikokopu,” said Mr K. McLeay. manager of Richardson and Co., when imenting on the proposal made by the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce that a regular shipping service should be maintained until the railway is completed. “We would have to increase the fares to such an extent that we would be accused of taking advantage of the position, and we don t wish to lay ourselves open to that charge,” said Mr McLeay. “ Boats are more costly to run than motor vehicles, and presumably a daily or a service on alternate days is what is required, Cargo for Wairoa could not be taken to Waikokopu. and it would have to be taken the rest of the journey by road, which would be very costly. We are doing all we can to cope with the traffic and will continue to do so.”
