DUNEDIN MAYORALTY FINAL COUNT OF VOTES SLIGHT REDUCTION IN MAJORITY The final count of the votes cast in the mayoral election reduces Mr A. H. Allen’s majority over the Rev. E. T. Cox from 4163 to 4038. The figures, as finally announced yesterday by the Returning Officer (Mr R. A. Johnston) are as follows: — ALLEN, Andrew Henson 17,929 Cox, Edwin Thoms .. 13,891 Majority for Allen .. 4,038 Informal 212 RESULTS IN WELLINGTON LABOUR’S DEFEAT EXPLAINED TRIBUTE TO THE VICTORS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 13. In reference to the Wellington election results, Mr J. H. Collins, secretary of the Labour Representation Committee, said Labour wished to pay tribute to the intensive propaganda campaign of its opponents. Had Labour had half the financial resources of its opponents the results would have been entirely different. It was obvious that a large number of Labour supporters, confident of a Labour victory, did not cast their votes, while their opponents polled every available vote. “On the whole, while disappointed with the results,” said Mr Collins, “we believe that Labour has maintained its position, and will in the not distant future have an opportunity of demonstrating to the citizens of Wellington its administrative ability in local body as well as national affairs.” PETONE MAYORALTY LABOUR’S DEFEAT CERTAIN (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 13. The Petone mayoralty is now certain. Mr Scholefield, the Labour Mayor, is defeated by the Citizens candidate, Mr London, who now has a lead of 27. LOWER HUTT COUNCIL RECOUNT FAVOURS LABOUR CANDIDATE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 13. On a recount Mr H. G. Burrell (Labour) replaces Mr C. G. Hedge (Citizens’ ticket) on the Lower Hutt Borough Council, making five Citizens’ councillors and four Labour.
