OBITUARY
MR S. W. GEDDES Mr Samuel Wilson Geddes, who died in Dunedin on,, Thursday, arrived from the North of Ireland at the age of nine years, with his parents, and was educated at the Caversham School. On leaving school, he joined the firm of Messrs A. and J. MacFarlane. and later became the licensee of the Empire Hotel, in Naseby. During the six years he was there he was interested in all sporting activities, being a notable cricketer and a champion curler. He was also a councillor for the town, and upon leaving Naseby was the recipient of an illuminated address, as an indication of the esteem in which he was held by the .residents. He later bought the Gridiron Hotel, at Dunedin, and was licensee for a great number of years. Mr Geddes was very well known and popular in Otago for his kindly and generous disposition, and was at various times a member of the Trotting Club, the Jockey Club, the Commercial Travellers’ Association, the Otago Motor Club, the Otago Expansion League, and numerous other charities, snorting and civic organisations, including the Caledonian Bowling Club and the Dunedin Sports Club. He was a member of the St. Matthew’s Church vestry. Mr Geddes is survived by his widow, two sons—Mr Alfred Geddes, of Christchurch, and Mr Henry Geddes, of Dunedin—and two daughters—Mrs Harper White, of Auckland, and Mrs David Forsyth, of Port Chalmers.
