THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." (Established November 15, 1861.) DUNEDIN, MONDAY, MAY 13, 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The report of the Rector of the High School and that of the Inspector of Schools will be read with interest, as they show the progress of education in the Province The latter is valuable on account of its statistical details; the former because it points out the character of the education given in the highest educational institution, and bears testimony to the efficiency of the district schools in preparing pupils for the more advanced training given at the High School. . . In Dunedin the progress is very marked: for while in 1861-62 there were but 228 children attending school, the number at the close of last year was 1193, exclusive of 180 poor scholars in the Free Schools. The latter institutions, of which there are two, for “ the education “ and training of poor or neglected “ children,” must be regarded as a most important step. Nothing can be more distressing to contemplate than the presence in a civilised community of a number of children neglected by their parents and the world, growing up without knowledge, and receiving only that training that fits them to become the tools of the depraved, and as they advance in years to prey upon Society, spreading the leaven of immorality and vice, until there springs up what is most to be feared a dangerous class. The establishment of the two schools alluded to will tend to counteract such a tendency, and prepare those who might otherwise be a burden on society for careers of honorable usefulness.

. . . Turning to the higher education imparted at the High School, its comprehensiveness and character are not excelled in any of the high class schools at Home. It has been said, with truth, that more is ex-

pected of every generation than was demanded of that which preceded it, and the demand of the present generation is amply met by the course of study marked out for pupils. It has been the fashion hitherto to complain that a good education cannot be obtained for youths in the Colonies, and in many instances, in consequence of the prevalence of that idea, parents have gone to great expense in sending their children Home. Whatever may have been the need of doing so in past days, there is no necessity now. ... !

The Southland Acclimatisation Society have accepted the offer of Dr Menzies, to form a pond for trout ova, at the Wyndham, and the Secretary was requested to notify the Acclimatisation Society of Otago to that effect—the Wyndham being on the Otago side of the Mataura.

This pretty invention is being seriously republished, by different papers, on the authority of the “ Dunstan Times —“ It is reported that Mr Prendergast, _ the Attorney-General, has arrived in Dunedin, and intends taking legal proceedings against all parties who have been guilty of inciting persons to acts of rebellion against the authority of her Majesty the Queen.”

During the past week, indoor relief has been given by the Otago Benevolent Institution to four men, three women, 27 boys, and 22 giris. Out-door relief was afforded to 27 adults and 46 children, of both sexes. The Mayor of Port Chalmers has convened a meeting of the electors, to be held at Crickmore’s Royal Assembly Rooms, this evening, for the purpose of considering the means of obtaining a water supply to the Port; and afterwards to take into consideration who shall represent the District in the House of Representatives.
