PROVOCATIVE PEACEMAKERS

The propagandists are now in massed formation, says the dramatic critic Mr St. John Ervine, writing on the appearance of no fewer than 10 peace plays in London. A plain man who wants only to hear the truth or as much of it as human beings can bear to be told is in grave danger of foundering in a flood of lies. There are times when I am tempted to think that the worst enemy of peace is the contemporary pacifist, who provokes more men to wrath than any militarist I have ever met. I have known a room full of perfectly peaceable citizens to be thrown into a turmoil less than 10 minutes after the entrance of a devoted lover of peace and concord. Men and women who would not have dreamt of tapping each other on the nose prior to the appearance of this pacifist were seeking each other's blood soon after his arrival. There is, indeed, a sort of man who cannot utter the word peace without causing an explosion. The word disarmament has scarcely left his lips before things start to go off pop all round him. He is resolved to have peace even if he has to shoot us all to get it.
