ALEXANDRA

Borough Improvement The installation of sewers at a total cost of £10,004 was described in a statement presented by the town clerk to the Alexandra Borough Council on Monday night as the only important work carried out during the present council’s term of office. Other matters had been deferred until this large undertaking was completed. All but some' 25 houses in the outer area of the town were now connected to the sewers, and of those 10 had septic tanks installed.' It was proposed to serve the other 15 with a sealed-pan system, beginning within the next few weeks. The total cost of the work was £10.004, of which the sum of £2633 was received in employment subsidy. One outstanding feature in connection with streets, the town clerk stated, was the declaring of the street, from the bridge to the boundary on the Clyde road, a State highway, and the taking over of the maintenance of it by the Public Works Department. It was originally intended that the State highway between Alexandra and Clyde should be the road on the west side of the river, and it was only through the efforts of the council that it came through Alexandra. Some half mile of this State highway has been prepared for tar-sealing and the first coat sprayed cm, making a considerable improvement at no cost to the borough The agreement with the Public . Works Department to supply water from the Butchers dam was completed, and the supply commenced in January, 1937. The amount of sediment in the water and the poor supply to the outskirts of the town had given the council some concern, and it was decided to ask Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, civil engineer, to make a comprehensive report on the water reticulation with a view to improvement. Mr Roberts was at present working on this report. Some 10,000 young trees were planted on the afforestation area, and a good strike was made at each planting. The inaugurators of this scheme should feel proud to see the fine block of trees established and the large number of young trees coming on to provide a very fine asset in a few years.
