MERITED RECOGNITION

The importance of Waipori to Dunedin is reflected in the status of the city electrical engineer. For the last twenty-three years that position has been occupied by Mr M. C. Henderson, who is now retiring, and we take the opportunity of cordially endorsing the tributes of recognition to the value of his services to the city which have been tendered to him. Mr Henderson has been identified with the Waipori undertaking from the time that power was first brought into the city over thirty years ago. His appointment to the position of city electrical engineer was a happy one for Dunedin, and in that capacity he has superintended the development of this leading municipal enterprise during the most important period of its progress and growth. He has been inseparably identified with its expansion into the great asset which it now Is to this community. During the long period of his responsible service the Waipori undertaking has gone through some critical times, and various problems have presented themselves, but a feature upon which the citizens have had reason to congratulate themselves has been the efficiency and smoothness with which a service adequate to meet requirements has always been maintained. Foresight has been necessary in view of the growth of the enterprise in proportion to the increased demands upon it, and it has been largely due to the energy and ability which the city electricity engineer brought to his task that Waipori provides to-day an outstanding example of successful municipal enterprise. The City Corporation has been fortunate in having the services of an electrical engineer so conscientious and capable and one whose qualities have been so much appreciated by members of the staff of his department and the many, representative of allied interests, with whom his duties have necessarily brought him into contact. The citizens as a body, mindful of the assurance which the knowledge that Waipori has been under Mr Henderson’s watchful and experienced control has given them, will echo the expressions of recognition accorded to his services. Otherwise Mr Henderson’s best testimonial in his retirement is Waipori itself.
