FREE KINDERGARTEN

COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Fjee Kindergarten Council was held on Thursday-' afternoon, when Mrs Batham, acting president, was in the chair. The following members were also<f present: Lady Allen, Mesdames Fitzgerald, Gallaway, Garrett, Haggitt, Hudson, Iverach, Melville, Moody, Smith, Sim, Taverner; Wright, and WHitcombe, &nd Misses Duthie, Scott, and Ulrich.

The; executive reported .that arrangements were in hand for the biennial refresher course for kindergarten directors and assistants, which would be held in Dunedin at the end of the first term. Three subcommittees were set *up to arrange the programme, accommodation, and transport. The principal reported that the total roll number of children at all the kindergartens was 326 and that the daily routine was now running smoothly. It was hoped to have several new pieces of outside equipment at the kindergartens shortly. Advantage had been taken of the fine weather to have as many outside activities as possible, visits being made by small bands of children to the beach, Gardens, and other places of interest. This year there were eight students in training, five being seniors and three juniors. It was reported that the local committees had commenced their meetings, and members were already busy arranging jumble sales to augment the funds. The local com-, mittee at Richard Hudson Memorial Kindergarten reported having received the bequest of 100 guineas from the late Mrs Hudson, and that part of the money would be used to bring the equipment up to date and to improve the grounds.

Mothers' clubs, too, were arranging their programmes for the year. The club at Kelsey-Yaralla had sent in a gift of £4 towards the new outside material being purchased for that kindergarten, this assistance being greatly appreciated by council members.
