RANFURLY Cricket The Maniototo Cricket Association played two representative matches on Saturday last against South Otago. The first eleven game, which was played at Patearoa, was a challenge for the Crosby Morris Cup, and for the fourth time this season Maniototo was successful in retaining the trophy. Lawn Tennis The final of the South End B Grade Competition in the Maniototo Association was played at Waipiata on Saturday between Patearoa A abd Ranfurly B. The match was also a challenge for the Jones Cup. Ranfurly were successful in winning by nine sets to seven. With two sets to go the sets were even, seven all. Playing conditions were ideal, and the match provided some excellent tennis, the majority of the sets being closely contested. The final match for the premiership of the county between Ranfurly and the winners of the north-end section will be played on the Omakau courts on March 12. This Saturday the finals of the handicap tournament and the Maniototo Championships will be held at Ranfurly, play commencing at 9 a.m.

Farewell to Priest On Tuesday, February 22, there' was a pleasant gathering of parishioners and friends in the Catholic Church Hall to bid farewell to the Rev, Father T, Hally, who had been parish priest in Ranfurly for the past seven years. Father Graham, who has been appointed in Father Hally's place, occupied the chair. There were present Father Tylee (Omakau) and Father O'Connell (Alexandra), as well as representatives of various sporting clubs in which Father Hally had had an interest. In presenting .Father Hally with a cheque on behalf of the parishioners of Ranfurly, IV v. Dowling spoke in glowing terms of the way in which Father Hally had carried out his duties. Mr Dowling also referred to the high esteem in which Father Hally was held, not only by his congregation, but by all. those who had the pleasure of coming in contact with him, Mr L. Bleach and Mr R. Hanrahan, members of the Church Committee, also spoke in appreciation of Father Hally's services Other presentations in connection witn the church were made by Mrs &, O'Neill, on behalf of the children, and by Mr V. Herlihy, on behalf of the present and past altar boys. Mr E Carr, on behalf of the Maniototo Cricket Association, .presented* ather Hally with a suitably inscribed inkstand. Father Hally was also the recipient of gifts from the Waipiata Cricket Club, presented by Mr Reichal. and one presented by Mr-J. Macdonald, addressed the electors and received a most attentive hearing. The Mayor (Mr J. S. Varcoe) presided, and introduced the speaker, who is well and favourably known in this district, where he resided for many years. His address was eagerly followed, and at the conclusion he received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.

Poultry Club '•;•■ v , There was a short meeting of the Tapanui Poultry Club on Friday evening for the purpose of considering the appointment of someone;■ to the position of secretary of the club. Mr J. W. Jarrold, who presided, explained that no applications had been receivea for the position. After a general discussion it was decided to advertise the position again. Personal Mr and Mrs W. S. Robertson, Suva, are at present' the guests of the former's parents, Dr and Mrs Robertson. Mr Robertson, who is on thtt staff of the Bank of New Zealand, >s on two months' furlough. Obituary The news of the death of Mrs V. G. M. Norton, wife of the Rev. W. H. Norton, which occurred after a long illness on Sunday evening, was received with deep regret throughout the district. Mrs Norton was held in high esteem, and there war a large congregation at the service held in the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday morning before the cortege left for Pleasant Point, where the interment took place. ,
