THE SHOP ASSISTANT
TO THE EDITOR,
Sir,—The present Government has done much for many workers. It has raised their wages and shortened their hours. There is. however, one class of worker which is victimised to carry on the old tradition of public convenience—the shop assistant. T am mainly concerned for the female shop assistant who is expected to work on Fridays from 8.50 in the morning to 9 o'clock in the evening. A very long day! Long for men. but certainly too long for girls arid women. It is. to me, a surprising thing that a humane public has not long ago realised how wrongly shop assistants are treated. It is surely inhuman to force a 10-hour day on shop assistants when many workers enjoy a 40-hour week. The shop assistants' week is a 44-hour one. and it is worked indoors, without open air, healthy conditions.—l am. etc.. Just a Woman.
