MAGISTRATE'S COURT A sitting of the Port Chalmers Magistrate's Court was held yesterday before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M; SPEED LIMIT EXCEEDED John Callen Stevenson was charged with driving a heavy motor vehicle at Sawyers' Bay at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour. " He pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by Traffic Inspector Mackay, who said he had checked the defendant's speed over a distance of about a quarter of a mile. It had been 37 to 38 miles per hour. The defendant denied having travelled faster than 30 m.p.h. The magistrate said he must accept the evidence regarding the check made by the inspector. The defendant would be fined 30s and costs (10s). REPAIRS TO DRAINS The adjourned case in which the Port Chalmers Borough Council proceeded against Rosalinda Jessie Anderson for creating a nuisance through not having drains in proper ordered was concluded. Mr K G. Roy, for the Borough Council, said the parties had arrived at an agreement regarding what work should be done. Mr A. G Neill. who appeared for the defendant, aid it was considered likely that the house complained of would be condemned as a result of the recent housing survey. Under the circumstances he did not think the position called for a substantial penalty The Health Department had now agreed to repairs involving only a sum instead of the extensive work originally insisted upon. The magistrate said it was satisfactory to know that the matter had been arranged. The case might never have gone as far as this if the* parties had got together in the first place. He mentioned that it was no use resenting the actions of a local body officer who was only carrying out his statutory duties. The defendant would be ordered to pay court costs (10s) and solicitor's fee (£2). LICENSING COMMITTEE The quarterly meeting ot., the Chalmers Licensing Committee—Mr J R. Bartholomew, S.M.. chairman and Messrs T. Scollay. T Anderson. T. Wilson and H Cooke—was held yesterday at Port Chalmers. An application for the transfer of the Mosgiel Hotel from Michail Cahill to John Patrick O'Brien was granted. On the application of Mr A. G Neill. Kathleen Hannan was granted leave to carry on the business of Chick's Hotel.
