SHOP ASSISTANTS

CLAIMS FOR NEW AWARD PARTIAL AGREEMENT REACHED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 4. The Conciliation Council which has been discussing the application of the New Zealand Federated Shop Assistants' Industrial Association of Workers for a new Dominion award, concluded its sitting to-day. A partial agreement was reached. The main questions that the council decided to refer to the Court of Arbitration were whether the working week should be of 40 hours or of 44, whether work should be done on Saturdays, and the schedule of wages. The last-mentioned question hinges in some measure on the number of hours each week that the Arbitration Court decides to award.

There was a partial agreement on classification. The council agreed on clauses covering temporary and casual hands and on holidays, except that the decision on whether the annual holiday without pay should be one week or two weeks, was left to the court. The minor matters referred to the court include the proportion of females in special departments and payment for dresses.
