BUSES VERSUS TRAMS

ro THE EDITOR Sir, —I quite agree with your correspondent “ Ratepayer ” as to the tram service at present in operation, and it really seems as if the council had decided to run the tramcars until they were of no further use. I remember the Mayor’s statement, made some time back, that the council had decided to run buses instead of the cable tram to Maryhill. We can readily understand the reason: the buses would run as far as the Clyde Hill housing extension, and that would be an uplift for the resident; there. But the Maryhill residents, who are not too well served at present, would have a grievance, as the buses could not carry the passengers at crush times that the cable tram does and keep to a time-table. Likewise, the council may extend the bus service to the Government’s housing at Liberton, and so popularise that dim and distant section. However, I am quite satisfied no bus service could be run in this city to carry the number of passengers with safety to a timetable, and at the same cost per mile. So, without going any further, let us ask the Labour Council where they got their expert advice, and have they really decided to do away with the present tramcars eventually and replace with motor buses. —I am, etc., Inquirer.
