I NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 25. It is some years since a track as firm as that at Gore to-day has been raced on in Southland, and a good number of horses were very tender. Coat o f Arms broke down completely. Poniard was a good favourite tor rhe High-weight Handicap, and he won nicely at the finish Sir Admiral and Delrain were chopped back at the start, and Coat of Arms and Pink Del led out from Last Post and Poniard with The Surgeon and Double Shot at the head of the others. This was the order until the far turn, where Last Post was beaten off and Poniard moved up Coat of Arms stopped at the top of the straight, where Poniard led Pink Del Poniard came on to win easily, and The Surgeon finished better than Pink Del. Delrain was fourth, and then came Last Post and Double Shot. Valmarch made no race of the Longford Handicap . He was first out. receiving all the best of the start and never looked like being beaten. It was a poor despatch, in which Spanish Lad. Combat. Nightwings Aspire and Mona’-' Song received all the worst of it. At the far turn Valmarch was three lengths clear of Western Song. Verdure. Gipsy Fair, and Peony Rose, and he won with a lot to spare. Peony Rose finished better than Western Song. whi ! e she just lasted long enough to beat Monk’s Song for c econd The latter was definitely unlucky as she wac one of the last away, and finished on beHer than nnwfhine apart from the winner Asnire went a sound race after being loft and so did Snnn ish Lad. The Electric Trot was a poor net ting race but it provided a good finish in which Glenelad won by a head from Kentucky Sun. .Provincial was smartest; to begin and after a mile he was attended by Glenelad, Dora land say. Kentucky Sun Loyalist and the favourite. Drumbunnif Glenelad and Provincial drew clear of Kentucky Sun and Dora Lindsay along the back, with Sun Gauge the only other with any chance, Glenelad shaded Provincial into the straight with Kentucky Sun and Sun Gauge handily placed. In a keen finish Glenelad soon had the measure of Provincial and he had enough in reserve to stave off a challenge from Kentucky Sun. who finished well. Sun Gauge was right up and then came Provincial. Drumbunnif, Dora Lindsay, and Catawrack Mulguy and June Tide lost any chance they had at the start. Galleon was backed down to j cramped price in the Racing Club Handicap, and although he won he had nothing to spare from Pink Robe, who

made all the pace. Pink Robe was chopped back at the start, but with a mile to go she ran to the front with Daring Deed, the pair being two lengths clear of Galleon, Grand Finale, and Island Linnet. Running down the back Pink Robe opened up a gap of five lengths from Grand Finale and Galleon, who moved up. The field closed on Urn leader at the far turn, where ' Pink Robe shaded Galleon by half a length, with Grand ffTinale and Island Linnet right up. Daring Deed was beaten off at this stage. Pink Robe shaded Galleon into the straight, with Island Linnet and Grand Finale a length further back. Galleon had to be ridden right out to beat Pink Robe by a head. Island Linnet was two lengths further back, with a gap of six lengths to Daring Deed and Grand Finale. The winner had nothing to spare, as Pink Robe came on again. Galleon’s time was a track record.

The public was unable to find a favourite for the Croydon Handicap, and Janet Gaynor and Rodeur were evenly backed on the win machine, but Rodeur was a slightly better favourite for a place. Moneyless and Beam were slow away, and at the end of two furlongs Viking shaded Janet Gaynor, with Rodeur right up. Beam was two lengths back. Running to the straight. Janet Gaynor cried enough, and Beam moved up to be second to Viking. The last-named was-first into the straight, but stopped in the run home. Beam looked an easy winner but was hotly challenged by Rodeur, who got to within a nose of her. Viking was third, and Janet Gaynor a bad last. Rodeur was definitely unlucky, while Janet Gaynor refused to respond to the vigorous riding of her apprentice. Guste, Dolita, and Ardmayle were slow away in the Novice Handicap, in which Free Service was first out. After two furlongs Silver Choir had charge from Foxlove, Astaire Guste, Slgnorina, and Gay Vixen. Silver Choir shaded Foxlove into the straight, with Astaire at the head of the others. Foxlove soon headed Silver Choir, who stopped in the run home. Astaire finished full of running to be second ahead of Gay Vixen. Foxlove raced right up to his Winton form, and was always in the van. Ardmayle was always at the rear. Grattanella had* the run of the race in the Progressive Trot, and he won well at the finish. Crown Peak, Salalon, Dolores Silk,, and King Drusus lost their chances at the start. Grattanella and Edith Grattan were always in charge from Sydney Grand, Bonny Brydone, and Capri. Grattanella was first into the straight from Sydney Grand Edith Grattan, and Bonny Brydone. Grattanella was challenged in the run home by Sydney Grand, but he had enough in hand to beat him off. Bonny Brydone finished with a great rush, and had she been better handled she may have troubled the winner. Edith Grattan had every chance.

Although Roy Bun was a better favourite than Sailing Lady for the Summer Handicap, which drew a fourhorse field, Sailing Lady made no race of it, and she won as she liked. She ran to the front with five . furlongs to go, and did not look like being beaten at the finish. Coxcomb finished full of running and, although he had no chance with the winner he beat Roy Bun as easily as he was beaten. It was Coxcomb’s best race by far. Lochie River tailed off after seven furlongs. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY (Per United Press Association) GORE, Feb. 25.
