MEETING OF SOCIETY A meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Amenities Society was held in the Chamber of Commerce board room yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs Crosby Morris (president), John Wilson, H. P. West, G. Simpson, W. J. Birrell, D. Tannock and Mrs C. Mackie Begg and Mr A. C. Cameron (secretary). ST. CLAIR CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND Mr Cameron reported that in company with Mr H. P. West he had inspected the progress of the work being done on the St. Clair children’s playground. The work was well in hand and the stone work looked particularly effective. Everything pointed to the completed job being a very definite improvement in the amenities of St. Clair and the city It was a pity the work had not been completed before Christmas, but if it meant a better job it was well worth waiting for. Mr Tannock said that the loose sand on the playground was blowing about and causing trouble to such an extent that the city engineer had been concerned at the position. The only way in which the trouble could be rectified would be to asphalt the area.

It was agreed that the playing area should be sealed to prevent the sand flying. SEATS FOR CITY RESERVES

Mr Cameron reported that 18 wellmade jarrah seats with backs had been constructed at a cost of £62 4s 3d, and that these were now ready to be placed in position. A subcommittee consisting of Mr D. Tannock, Mr Crosby Morris, Mrs H. L. Cook and himself had selected suitable positions for these seats, and they would be placed in position during the next few weeks. The seats would be placed in positions affording a splendid view of the harbour, St. Clair, and other vantage points. They would also be placed with a view to providing a suitable resting spot for pedestrians and for providing seating facilities at children’s playgrounds. The two seats presented by the Otago Women’s Club Gardening Committee would be placed in position on Signal Hill. The committee did not feel that it was the society’s duty to provide seats at car stops. This was clearly the duty of the City Corporation or the Tramways Department. SOUTHERN RECLAMATION AREA

Miss M. E. Scorgie wrote enlisting the support of the society in instituting some necessary tidying and improving of that part of the foreshore or southern reclamation area which lay along the Portobello road, near the Anderson’s Bay road. Near thi road were a number of stagnant pools, filled with old tins and rubbish, which were very unsightly and constituted a menace to the health of children who made the area a playground. Something should be done to beautify the road line, as it formed part of the scenic harbourside drive which was becoming more popular every day. After a brief discussion it was decided that a sub-committee inspect the area and report to the next meeting of the society. LOWER PORTOBELLO ROAD

It was decided that a sub-commit-tee confer with representatives of the Public Works Department in connection with the planting of shrubs and plants on the Lower Portobello road, and that the committee be empowered to make a grant of up to £25 for the upkeep of the plants. ROSS’S CORNER IMPROVEMENT Mr Tannock reported that a private donation of £2O had been made to the City Council for th* purpose of carrying out improvements at Ross’s corner. The president said it was gratitying that the work would be done without expense to the society.
