AMERICAN AIR LINES

FIGHT BEHIND THE SCENES ATTEMPT TO BREAK MONOPOLY (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 8. (Received Dec. 8, at 11.30 p.m.) A battle which will determine whether Pan-American Airways will continue to exert monopolistic control of America’s transoceanic aviation is being fought behind the scenes, says the New York Daily News Washington correspondent. The Maritime Commission will ask Congress for power to subsidise the development of competing airlines breaking up the Pan-American monopoly. It is understood that Colonel Lindbergh, Pan-America’s technical adviser, will throw the weight of his great influence on behalf of the company, . The army and navy are said to be behind the movement against Pan-American Airways since they believe that competition and rivalry among the many American lines concerned in ocean flying will bring about a greater advance in American aviation. The military authorities, furthermore, object to granting American port rights to foreign lines under negotiations which are carried out, not by the United States Government, but by the Pan-American Company’s private agents in order to secure reciprocal rights for Pan-American lines in foreign ports. The PanAmerican lines have already received 60,000,000 dollars as subsidies during the last nine years.
