By Jack

' SEASON’S FIXTURES December 25, 27, and 28.—Christmas Pairs Tournament. December 30, 31, January 2 and 3. Southland Centre’s tournament. January 10.—New Zealand Champion ship tournament (opening day). February 12.—South Otago Rink tour nament, Elderly Bowlers’ Day. February 28.—Fou'r-rink Championship final. March s.—Otago v. Southland, at Invercargill. March 10.—Otago v. Canterbury (Red path Shield). INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Last Saturday’s interclub championship games were again favoured with ideal weather. The only alteration in the championship table at the end of the day’s play was that Fair field, by winning its section and securing the maximum points, has joined Kaikorai at the top of the list. The following are the results of Saturday’s games, together with the championship points scored to date by each club: — Points

FOUR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP The almost unbroken spell of fine weather has enabled all Four-rink Championship games to be played off up to time. Dunedin, which has been the most consistent performer in this competition, will have its work cut out to qualify this season, as it has already lost two games out of three. In the first game Dunedin went down to Leith by one point, then lost to St. Clair by seven or eight points, and squeezed home by two points against Balmacewen in the third game. At one stage of this game Balmacewen held a commanding lead and appeared assured of victory. DOMINION TOURNAMENT The entries for the New Zealand bowling tournament, which will be opened here on January 10, show a marked increase compared with those received four years ago, when the tourney *"was last held in Dunedin. The comparative figures as- as follows: 1938 1934 Singles 256 168 Pairs 224 180 Rinks 124 93

The entry from North Island clubs —ls rinks —may seem rather disappointing, but it can safely be said that a much larger contingent would have come from Auckland had not a large party from the Auckland and other northern centres been taking part in the big bowls carnival in Sydney next year. The North Island entry Is made up as follows: —Wellington, six rinks; Auckland, three; Wairarapa, Wanganui, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay, one each. The entries from the Dunedin Centre, which total 55 rinks, must be considered very satisfactory, and practically all the clubs in the centre will be represented. Generous patronage has been bestowed by the Christchurch Centre, no fewer than 21 Canterbury rinks having forwarded entries. The Southland Centre will be represented by 11 rinks, North Otago 5, Central Otago 5, Nelson 2, West Coast 2, Duller 2, and South Otago and Marlborough 1 6a Not only is the entry a large one, but it includes a large. number of powerful combinations, including a rink skipped by R. Haworth (Canterbury Club), who has skipped the winning rink at the last two Dominion tournaments. . . . For the Singles Championship 16 full greens will be occupied, 12 greens for the Pairs, and 19 for the Rinks. A large number of experienced players to act as umpires and also to act as markers for the Singles games will be required, and players willing to assist in this respect are requested to notify the secretaries of their clubs, who will forward the names to the secretary of the New Zealand Association (Mr Hanning). MILLER’S FLAT TOURNAMENT ' The Miller’s Flat Club will hold a New Year tournament consisting of a Singles competition on January 1 and a Pairs tournament on January 3. The games will be played under the sectional system, and each player or team will be guaranteed three games, entries must reach the secretary before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29. No difficulty will be experienced if the entry is too large to be accommodated on the Miller’s Flat green, as’ the Roxburgh Club will allow the use of its green if it is required. During the afternoon tea, Mrs Patterson (president of the Meadowbank Club) thanked the Mornington ladies for the welcome extended to them, to which Mrs Whale (president of Mornington Club) suitably replied. The members of the Palmerston Ladies’ Bowling Club visited Mornington Ladies’ Bowling Club on Thursday last to play a friendly match, but owing to the nature of the weather the game was not played. The visitors were entertained in the pavilion by the local ladies.
