By PIIILUDA.

WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS' UNION

Reports of meetings ot branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. The final meeting of the year of the Berwick Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Thursday last, and was presided over by Mrs Miller. An appeal was made for a special donation to the community chest. The members later joined the Farmers' Union and Young Farmers Club for a social evening, the programme consisting of songs, recitations, instrumental items, and a dialogue given by members and friends. * * * The final meeting for the year of the Ngapara branch took the form of a social evening, there being several members ofjthe Young Farmers Club present. Competitions and games were held, and Mrs Geen gave an item. The competitions resulted as follows; “Bloom,” Mrs Butt and Miss B, Watson (equal) 1, Miss Butt 3; “ Plate of cakes.” Miss B. Wilson 1, Miss Butt and Miss N. Watson (equal) 2, Miss B Watson 4; “Gentleman's buttonhole. Miss M. Newlands 1, Mrs Butt 2, Miss N. Watson 3. A presentation was made to Mrs Blair in appreciation of her services to the branch,

The Clutha branch met in the Crown Hotel lounge on Friday afternoon, Mrs Knarston presiding. Correspondence regarding group representation for tne Provincial Council was received and approved. It was decided to support the proposal for raising funds to increase the income of the organisation s “ community chest,” which has proved of so much benefit in providing help in necessitous cases to country mothers, who would otherwise have been unable to procure it. Interesting accounts of their impressions during the recent “ Country Women’s Week ” were given by the branch delegates, Mesdames Donaldson and Macfarlane.

The Waihola branch held a dance on Friday, the occasion being the fourth birthday of the branch. Visitors from Waitati, Mosgiel, Berwick, Taieri Mouth, Milburn, and Henley attended. Miss Paterson, president, opened the evening with a few words. Between dancing the following items were contributed: —Mrs O’Fee, Mrs L. Borrow, Mr Draper, and Mr Rogers, songs, accompanied by Mrs Borrow; Miss Swallow, a recitation; and Jean Dewar and Gwenda Brinsdon, a humorous dialogue. Mrs Drake entertained with an interesting address on the founding of the Women’s Division and her visit to the branches in the North Island. Mr Henkey was M.C.

A BATH IN DESERT SAND

ABORIGINAL BABIES LIKE IT With the numerous hints on hygiene, the clinics and day nurseries, one wonders how the white mothers of the outback and the aboriginal women manage to keep their offspring alive. But beautiful baby specimens are to be found in the most remote places. During a compulsory visit to Oldea, on the trans-Australian railway route (I had got out of the train to have a look around, and it had gone on without me), I came across some of Australia’s very best. Mrs Daisy Bates, a journalist and undenominational missionary, was in charge of them. There was no water, but the babies were bathed daily. Their bath was the warm desert sand. They were rolled over and over, and came out as clean as whistles. They were as happy as little “ sandboys.” Mrs Bates has spent almost 20 years among the aborigines. There is very little infant mortality, she says. When water is scarce, the sand is dry, and adults as well as babies use it for bathing purposes. Sometimes one wonders about all this hygiene.— Enid Delalande. in the Sydney Morning Herald.
