BEACH ROAD The Port Chalmers Borough Council is making extensive alterations to the Beach road. Workmen are engaged in removing the grass in preparation for the spreading of rock, which will be obtained from the point that is to be removed. This road will be straightened in several places, and when completed will become a popular drive for motorists, and‘ Will add to the scenic attractions of the port. FISHING INDUSTRY Weather conditions have not been good for the Port Chalmers fishermen this week. The majority of the boats were at their moorings on Monday owing to the fine rain and mist on the hilltops preventing the fishermen picking up their landmarks. During the week-end the Bravo was unfortunate in having to return to port with a brokeh winch. On Monday the National Mortgage and Agency’s Company’s trawler Hananui, after being two days on the fishing grounds, returned with 130 small cases of flats (601 b) and 47 cases of round fish, and on Wednesday with 110 cases, returning a day earlier than usual owing to a mishap to the.net. A strong northeasterly breeze prevented any of the smaller craft putting to sea yesterday. UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES The annual meeting of the Port Chalmers United Friendly Societies' Dispensary Board of Management was held in the council chambers on Friday evening. The chairman stated that the business for the year had been satisfactory. Owing to the resignation of the manager, Mr R. J. Paul, the board had received 16 applications for the vacant position. All applicants had high qualifications, and after careful consideration Mr J. Matthews, at present manager for Thomson’s Pharmacy, Riverton, had been appointed to fill the vacancy. The election of officers was held over until the next meeting of the board, CRICKET CLUB New material is required by the local Cricket Club, and a strong committee has been formed for the purpose of arranging a bazaar in March. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs A. Coleman returned to Port Chalmers on Tuesday evening after a motor tour of the North Island.
