Mr A. C. Cameron left yesterday on a business visit to Christchurch. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the executive of the Municipal Association. Mr T. Meredith (president of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union) and Mr Douglas M. Spedding (treasurer of the Otago Rugby Union) left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the council of the union. Mr Errol Fuller and Mr D. Slyfield returned by. the express last night from a business visit to Wellington. Mr C. M. Wallace, who has been manager of the Gore branch of Messrs J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., for the past year, has received notice of his transfer to the position of manager of the Ashburton branch. Mr Wallace will take up his new duties early in the new year. Mr J. Ward, of Auckland, has been appointed manager of the Gore branch. The Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) announced yesterday that the following candidates had been selected for short-service commissions in the Royal Air Force, and would sail from New Zealand on February 12: — D. R. Bagnall (Wellington), R. B. Bould (Auckland), I. R. Gow (Wellington), J. T. Strang (Timaru), and P. W. West (Palmerston North).

A Press Association message from Wellington states that a very unusual and happy ceremony was performed by the Governor-General (Viscount Galway) yesterday morning, when he presented the accolade of knighthood to Sir Charles Norwood, who has been a patient in the Bowen Street Hospital for some weeks. The honour was conferred upon Sir Charles by his Majesty earlier in the year, but illness prevented the recipient’s attendance at Government House for the ceremony. Lady Norwood and a number of personal friends were present. The Union Airways liner Karoro left the Taieri airport at 8.15 .yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim, and Palmerston North with Mrs K. Passmore and Miss M. E. Kincaid for Christchurch, Mr McDouall Smith for Palmerston North, and Mr S. C. Sutherland. a through passenger for Auckland. The Korimako arrived from the north at 3 p.m. with Miss A. Kenton, a thi'ough passenger from Auckland, and Messrs J. Nairn, H. Johnston, and J R. Craydon from Christchurch.

At a meeting of directors of Messrs Brown, Ewing, and Co.. Ltd., yesterday morning, Mr A. F. Cheyne was appointed chairman of directors to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Mr C. Russsell Smith, who had held the position since March, 1932. Mr L, Deans Ritchie was appointed to the position on the directorate. The following resolution of sympathy was placed on record: —“The directors and management place on record their deep sense of loss in the death of their chairman (Mr C. Russell Smith), who, with quiet tact and sound judgment, guided the affairs of the company through a difficult period of its history.
