GOLDFIELDS REVENUE
COLLECTION BY MINES DEPARTMENT
CHARGE TO BE REDUCED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. The charge to be made by the Mines Department for collecting soldfields revenue on behalf of the local authorities is to be reduced from 10 per cent, to 5 per cent, as the result of an amendment recommended by the Governor-General under the Constitution Act to the Mining Amendment Act recently passed by Parliament. The necessary Governor-General's Message giving effect to the change was introduced in the House of Representatives today and the amendment was passed. " I stated when the Bill was before the House," said the Minister of Mines (Mr P. C. Webb) " that I had no objection to reducing the department's deduction from 10 per cent, to 5 per cent. It was impossible on constitutional grounds, however, for the Legislative Council to make the necessary amendment, but we are taking the course now being followed in order to meet the wishes of most of the country members."
