A STRATEGIC OUTPOST
ISLAND OFF CANADA GERMAN PROPOSAL REJECTED MONTREAL, Dec. 7. (Received Dec. 8, at 1 a.m.) The Premier, Mr M. Duplessis, rejected the proposal of a German syndicate to purchase Anticosti Island from the Consolidated Paper Corporation, the owners, at a sum estimated considerably in excess of 6,500,000 dollars. He declared that the island was one of Canada's strategic outposts. The island's pulpwood, moreover, was also unsaleable if intended for export.
