CENTRAL OTAGO SHOW

GOOD QUALITY GENERALLY RESTRICTED COMPETITION The forty-fourth annual show of the Central Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held at Omakau on Wednesday. As ahvays, this fixture attracts attention all over Central Otago, and it assumes for many the proportions of; a picnic and carnival more Othan v ;a display of stock and produce, arid, to these,, the presence this year of an unusually large nuxnher of side-shows and the fact that i the fine day was almost too hot, made the occasion . most enjoyable one. So far, that is on the entertainment side, the -society had every reason to be proud of its effort, but. unfortunately, many of the residents of the district appear to have failed to appreciate the real purpose of the show—the display in friendly rivalry of the best of the local breeding and products—with the result that, although' the entries all round were equal to tie last year's. total, a very considerable increase in the domestic industries section was required to offset the falling away in the sheep and horse sections. The . cattle classes, although about the same numerically as- last year, were similarly disappointing because of the limited range of competition. Competent judges are well aware of the high quality..of the stock-in the district, and .it is a pity, that more of this is hot forward at the show. It. is true that there are several outstanding breeders who regularly vgive full' support tp . the society, but there is a large quantity 6f stock of sufficiently . high quality to make keen competition. The practical benefits df such : competition should hardly need to-be . emphasised. - . Considering, the rather unfavourable nature of the season, the quality of the cattle, entries was good. The Jersey classes were the best, and Mr J. Muir’s bulls were true specimensof the breed. Mr A. Clouston had forward several fine Friesians, but the best representative of .the type was Mr 'R.: F. Duckworth’S chauhpion cow The. quality in the -sheep: classes also ' was all that could be. required, but competition was particularly? weak. The fat lambs were stocky and; solidly built, and the freezing classes made a good showing, The high equality, of the young horses was the leatufeof this class. As usual, the numerous- competitors attracted good entries, and .the -judging of-them kept the officials ’busily engaged until the evening.-'• •The, following is the prize list:— ■v .CATTLE Judge: jftlf W#-Keast (Middlemarch) Best Shorthorn bull, any age.
