SEVENTY-ONE TEARS AGO

A Select Committee of the Provincial Council of Canterbury was appointed to investigate the system of Immigration of that Province, and have issued their report. The principal conclusions and recommendations are —That there is at present no existing contract for the conveyance of emigrants from England—that the system of employing vessels without calling for tenders is not economical —that the Emigration Agent in England has not been sufficiently cautious in selecting unmarried female emigrants, matrons, and surgeons; and that his style of correspondence is not what it ougffi to be. An emigration agent should still select emigrants, but shipping arrangements should be left with the Park street Commissioners. Single women, between twelve arid thirty years of age, should have free passages; and in the case of grown up families, the parents and sons should be allowed assistance to one half the passage money, the other half to be paid on embarkation, or by bills given by friends in the Province for twothirds of the passage money, instead of half cash. No promissory notes to be taken in England for passage money. The present immigration system to be done away with, and an. Immigration Officer to be appointed at a salary of L3OO a year, with an assistant clerk, who are also to administer the charitable fund. No immigrant servants to be engaged on board ship at Lyttelton without written consent by the Immigration Officer. L 32,500 is due to the Immigration Department, which the Committee consider is an evidence of the laxity of the Immigration Officer. Should the recommendations of the Committee be adopted, the officer to be instructed to collect the arrears. Dion Boucicault’s successful drama of “Arrah Na Pogue” (or Arrah of the Kiss) was produced at the Princess Theatre, on Saturday evening last, for the first time. . , .

Mary Allen, the woman who on Wednesday last was remanded on suspicion of having stolen a chemise, was again brought before the Resident Magistrate on Saturday last. ' The police had fou..d the owner of the property stolen, a Miss Macfarlane, who stated that on Tuesday last she had placed the chemise on the grass in a piece of land at the rear of her premises, and had missed it in the morning. The prisoner was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment with hard labor. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The “ Wanganui Times ” says the two hundred Upper River Natives, who went on a visit to the King a month since, accompanied by several most influential rebel chiefs, had returned. Pehi asked whether fighting should be continued; and if so, what assistance, if needed, they might expect. The King replied that he was for peace; that there should be no more fighting with his consent; and desired Pehi to convey that intelligence to all concerned.
