One can easily lose count of time on the banks of the Avon these days (says the Christchurch Star-Si^» watching the ducks and their youngsters, most of whom are now three or four weeks old. There must have been many untold tragedies amongst the duck families this spring, for, while some mothers are shepherding as many as half a dozen ducklings, some have only one or two. Rats probably accounted for some of the eggs that these laid, and possibly for some of the newly-hatched ducklings, too, while other youngsters probably were dragged under by eels the first time they went swimming.
