A SOUTHLAND COLLIERY DISMISSAL CAUSES DISPUTE DEVELOPMENTS EXPECTED (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 2. At a stop-work meeting the miners of the Linton Coal Company decided by an overwhelming majority to refuse to work until a dismissed trucker was reinstated. A general meeting of all miners will be held on Sunday, when the question will be made a district matter. Mr G. L. Cross, genera] manager of the Linton Coal Company, said that the dispute had occurred on Friday, and following a discussion with union representatives on Monday morning the trucker concerned had been allowed to return to work pending a full investigation After an inquiry had been made it had been decided to dismiss the trucker Mr A. V. Prendeville, secretary of the Nightcaps District Miners’ Union, said to-night that the strike at the mine was definitely on He contended that the company had broken an agreement concerning the dismissals of workmen by not giving 14 days’ notice. In reply to Mr Prendeville’s allegation, Mr Cross said that a fortnight’s notice only was necessary when a man was dismissed through no fault of his own. This dismissal was a summary one for misconduct on the part of the employee and the company was not committing a breach of the working agreement.
